Yin and Yang are symbols representing the balance and harmony of life. The Chinese believe that opposites create balance—that is, yin and yang. This concept comes from the teachings of Lao Tze. Yin includes “female” energy, such as earth, dark, cold, and sweet. Yang includes “male” energy, such as sky, light, heat, and sour. Remember the Chinese creation story, in which the world started out as a jumble of yin and yang (page 12)?
These concepts flow throughout all of Chinese culture, including medicine, martial arts, feng shui, and nutrition. One example is cooking. Do you love “hot and sour” soup, or “sweet and sour” pork? Many dishes are created to have a balance of taste, appearance and healing properties, one of many ways that yin and yang concepts are used.
